Twitter Lists = EPIC FAIL

While the likes of Scobleizer [ http://scobleizer.com/] and Carrotmadman6 [ http://themediaguru.blogspot.com/ ] love Twitter Lists, I find this feature to be a pointless one.
What is the Twitter Lists feature? – Grouping of contacts under categories (public + private) + displaying the latter’s last tweets.
What is Twitter all about? – Spreading textual microcontent.
Dear Twitter,
WTF is wrong with you? Grouping contacts mean that you’re going away from your primary purpose (to spread content & provide live trends,) and venturing into social networking.
Channels VS Groups/Lists
Say I have 100 lists on Twitter.
I expect that the tweets posted by the tweeps will match the category they are into. Well, they won’t for the nature of content is independent of tweeps. E.g. I was added into the “Sanctuary” (It’s a TV series) list. Do I tweet about Sanctuary all the time? No. My 100 lists are useless most of the time.
Having 100+ lists does not ease browsing at all. Browsing content from tweeps through the trending topics is way easier.
Dear Twitter, the use of the # hash tag should be linked to the lists. Lists should categorise tweeps as the latter are now, and tweets according to the hash tag. Displaying the last tweets (without categorising them) is silly.
A few weeks back, I was evaluating Twitter and Jaiku [http://jaiku.com/ ]. I never posted the results for it was too evident that Jaiku is the ultimate tool for nerds and businesses. List of features of Jaiku. [ http://fadil.fr/jaiku.txt ]
Jaiku makes use of channels. One can add contacts to channels (which can be private or public.) Users post content into the appropriate channels. Content is categorised for the the user chooses which channel(s) he/she is posting into. The public stream is separate from the stream of the channels.
Dear Twitter, if you really want to bloat your web site, adopt the features of Jaiku.
I, for one, find the Twitter Lists feature to be an epic fail! It is a useless/pointless feature. Only content should be categorised!

Check out my newly created Twitter lists. In which of the above lists do you wish to be listed? See! You never categorise users of a ‘content spread network.’ Oh, I like the term! [CSN] You categorise content! Twitter is wrong. Channels PWN lists. Refer to [ http://blog.fadil.fr/2009/10/30/twitter-lists-epic-fail/ ] I’m off to delete those lists! [...]

Ever since Orange has been on Twitter [ @orangemauritius] , many Mauritian tweeps have bashed it. The tweets consist of insults. It is surprising to take note that Orange has only 34 followers as of now but the insults flow in the Twitter stream every day. This is a huge success for Orange has been [...]

Jude Umeh wrote an interesting blog entry entitled “Twitter for Business, or is it. Really?” [ http://www.bcs.org/img/server.php?show=conBlogPost.1438 ] Do read it. I do not share his skepticism about the use of microcontent and micromedia in the business world. Extract: Perhaps I am just being impatient and this will come to pass in time, as in [...]
The basic HTML Twitter widget is no longer featured on twitter.com/widgets

Stacy just told me that Twitter has removed the basic HTML widget from its widgets page. Instead, there is another styled and embeddable one. It’s not that bad. Anyway, if you crave for the previous widget, here it is the embeddable piece of codes. Replace “yourusername” by your Twitter username. <div id="twitter_div"> <ul id="twitter_update_list"></ul> <a [...]

Information – vocal and handwritten – has undergone a massive metamorphosis with the introduction of mobile smart devices and the increase use of wireless Internet. The metamorphosis of information has brought a deep change in how humans communicate especially in regards to user to user interaction paradigms. The metamorphosis of textual and multimedia content has [...]

Here’s my situation…
During the day, I have to stay away from Twitter. When I get back home, how do I check my tweets archive!?
Sure, I could keep clicking more, more, more – until I finally give up (because it takes too much time for the page to load or I tire out).
But with Lists, I can categorise my following by content (Mru bloggers, tech, Blogger, web design). There is less information overload & I can multi-task the reading (& because I have less tweets, loading the page doesn’t lag that much).
The result – I can keep up with everyone in my timeline!
Twitter Lists = EPOCH WIN
P.S. With Lists, I can follow tweeps without following them.
October 30, 2009 - 5:04 pm
Wait till you have 100+ lists and 1000+ followers/following.
The length of the lists will be as long as the public stream.
Categorising content – you return home and read whatever interests you. With Jaiku channels – you can have users who join a channel and who are not in your contact list.
Twitter Lists = Epic Fail!
October 30, 2009 - 5:50 pm
Jaiku channels sounds a lot like Trending topics == spammers.
October 30, 2009 - 5:54 pm
Nope – because you can administer the stream + moderate new requests to join the channel. It’s spam-free.
The Jaiku channels focus on content spread and not classification of users. This is what Twitter should have been like from the start.

Update: According to Brizzly, one can have only 20 lists. It’s still a high number.
